The Island Fox (Urocyon littoralis) is a diminutive fox endemic to six of the eight Channel Islands, an island chain located off the coast of southern California. Several of the island-specific subspecies of the fox are listed as endangered under the Federal Endangered Species Act, however, their numbers have recovered well in recent years due to successful management of factors that had increased their mortality rates, such as feral pigs and the presence of Golden Eagles.
This Island Gray Fox was photographed in February 2016 on Santa Cruz Island, Channel Islands National Park, California.
I really enjoyed watching and photographing this fox as it went about its business, doing things that foxes do. What endangered species have you enjoyed watching?
