I’ve tried my best to identify to this plant to species and have not succeeded in doing so. It was the only one of its kind in several miles of hiking, and was photographed at an elevation of about 7,000 feet on the desert side of the San Bernardino Mountains in San Bernardino County, California in May 2016 during a Golden Eagle nest survey. I was particularly enamored with the contrast between the brightly-colored flowers and the dry brown and gray background of its environment.
