Cool Clouds in the Verdugos

Even though I am supposed to be training for January’s HURT 100, I hadn’t run a step in two weeks. Having just come off an extended layoff because of a knee injury, I woke up the next day after running Mt. Baden-Powell with pain in both my knees. Two weeks later, that pain was still present. It was noticeable even when walking.

Despite this issue, I decided to tag along with my wife on her existing planned run yesterday and see how it went. We went to the Beaudry trailhead in the Verdugo Mountains. My knees felt bad for the first mile and I thought I would have to turn around. Almost magically, the pain gradually went away as we clicked off mile two. It was clear that I have some sort of soft tissue problem (tendonitis?) and, perhaps, that could give me some guidance with how to manage it going forward.

We only planned to run six miles. The weather was fantastic. With an incoming low pressure system (it’s raining in Los Angeles this morning), the temperatures were nice and cool, and spectacular clouds swirled around us, over downtown Los Angeles, and against the other mountain ranges. We both felt good as we reached our planned turnaround point and agreed to continue on, running the entirety of the spine of the Verdugo Mountains. We ended the run with twelve miles on our legs, and I am happy to be back in full training mode.
