The Northern Hawk-Owl (Surnia ulula) is a medium-sized owl of northern boreal forests. It is panarctic, occurring in North America, Europe, and Asia. Unlike most owls, it is entirely diurnal.

The original was hand-drawn with pen and ink. The final image was scanned and converted to a vector graphic. I added color for the eyes and beak. This image is also available in its original black-and-white.

I will soon be releasing a different alternate version as well: an infographic poster, entirely hand-drawn and lettered, with a small section on species biology and a range map.
