I see Greater Roadrunners all the time, but only have managed to get good photos once on vacation in Baja California Sur, Mexico. This one almost acted as if it was modeling for me this morning while I was mapping coastal sage scrub in Ventura County.

Greater Roadrunners are members of the cuckoo family, and one of a series of “ground cuckoo” species that extend south through Latin America. Greater Roadrunners are hunters, and are often noted for eating lizards and snakes. A viral video on the internet recently showed one hunting hummingbirds at a hummingbird feeder. Another roadrunner I saw this morning spent some time poking around a brush pile, apparently searching for a California Towhee nest, while the towhees were protesting. It failed, and ran off out of sight. I may have seen a Coyote snickering in the bushes.
