ARTIST'S NOTES

This illustration of a male Allen's Hummingbird was completed in late 2015. This species is very common around my house in the hills just outside of Los Angeles. Males patrol territories and fight any and all intruders, even larger birds. This drawing is based upon a photograph I took of one such patrolling male in the park next to my home.

INFORMATION ABOUT COMMON SNAPPING TURTLE

The Allen's Hummingbird is a small hummingbird species, only reaching 3 to 3.5 inches in length. The majority of the population breeds along the west coast of the United States and winters in southern Mexico. There is a year-round resident population around Los Angeles. Its habitat includes woodlands, gardens, and meadows. This species is often difficult to separate in the field from the Rufous Hummingbird.
