Year One of England|Ecology, LLC

I’ve spent perhaps the last month thinking about doing a blog post on England|Ecology’s first year, which wasn’t even a full year since I left my position as Director of Biological Resources at Bargas in March. The intent was to potentially relay how well England|Ecology met the goals in the business plan. The problem, of course, is that I risk giving away too much information on exactly why 2023 was success. So, I will keep this short and sweet:

  • 2023 Goals: All were reached except, perhaps, getting to finality on a technology-based work product. A lot of the “tech” involved in that is developed and underpins the work that I do, however, helping to create a high quality work product (i.e., reports) while also being super efficient with time. I am also largely working with industries that I most want to work with. The exception to that is that I did not obtain a single large contract (in both financial and time-scale terms) in something that is not development-related, such as wildlife management plans that I have done in the past.
  • Projects: I developed two W-2 relationships with other consulting firms, keeping it strictly to higher-rate permitted surveys. For England|Ecology’s own contracts, we completed 37 projects in 2023. The majority of these were Biological Resources Assessments or similar, most in Los Angeles County, but some in surrounding counties.

The best part of it all was working more reasonable hours than I have in any corporate position, giving me the opportunity to continue to work on not just work/life balance, but balance in other aspects of my life as well.

Work keeps chugging along at the open of 2024, and we aren’t even in the “busy” season yet. I look forward to seeing what this year brings!
